Dear Joel – I’m a 34 year old left handed male that plays to a 15 handicap. I have struggled with the shanks since playing competitively in high school. Past instruction has shown that getting the club behind me or an over correction leading to a vertical swing plane have been recurring themes. I have never had a natural feel for the correct swing plane. The shanks occur once a year after I’ve been playing or practicing on consecutive days. I started playing hosel hockey the 4th and 5th day of a golf trip last week and it ruined rounds at 2 great courses. I am tired of the worry, fear, and humiliation of the annual shank fest. My goal for 2009 is to get to a single digit handicap and develop a consistent swing that I can rely on when playing 72 holes in 4 days. I am willing to dedicate the time and resources into achieving my goal. I’m looking for a PGA Teaching pro with a proven system that can give me a blue print to success and coach me through the process. I am not looking for a quick fix. Please e-mail me to set up a time to talk. I found parts of Tidewater Golf Course in Myrtle Beach that people have never walked on yesterday. I can’t do this every year. Help!

Joel: Just wanted to say thanks for hosting the seminar last week. I enjoyed it very much and would enjoy spending some time with you with the Kvest to improve my numbers to get them into the ranges. Be good: Ralph Landrum

Steve, I too share your sentiments. I never expect to be a great golfer, but would love to simply correct things to make the game more enjoyable, consistent bogey golf would be wonderful with a par thrown in for a surprise.
The problem that I have found with past teachers is that they try to change your ENTIRE swing to mimic a pro. This might be possible for maybe 2% of recreational golfers, but most of lack the flexibility to achieve this corrrect posture during the swing. This type of instruction and not working with the ability that you have only compounds the problem.
I too share your frustration, lack of confidence and embarrassment, especially when you have the carts backed up at the first tee box full of “real golfers” watching you hit a pitiful 150 yd slice onto the next fairway. You laugh it off but deep inside it is like having your zipper down at a job interview.
I plan on taking lessons at Meadow Links with Joel or whoever is available. I have tried two other pros with no, I mean NO success. I got more out of the free videos on About.com in the golf section or watching the video on youtube of Ben Hogans swing.
But Ben Hogan says in his book, The 5 Fundamentals of Golf, he can take anyone of average coordination and make them an 80 golfer or better. That gives me hope. Good Luck on your quest!
